With the cooperation both of The Cultural Association of Turkish Women (TÜRKKAD ) and The International Mevlana Foundation, “Güneşle Aydınlananlar” , the International Hz. Shems Symposium, will be held from December 11th -16th 2009 in both Istanbul and then Konya. The symposium will host twenty-five academicians from four different countries who are experts in their fields. Both domestic and foreign guests will be in attendance and it will be held from the 11th -13th of December in Istanbul and then from the 14th -17th of December in Konya.
According to the statement of The Cultural Association of Turkish Women (TÜRKKAD), the aim of this symposium is to introduce the attendees to the Islamic scholar Hazrat Shems (k.s) (Shamsu 'd-deen Muhammad al-Tabreezee from Tabrîz) and to further our understanding of this great scholar who honored Turkey with his being and who was the spiritual master of the well-known Islamic scholar Hazrat Mawlana Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (k.s) and who has captured worldwide interest with his universal message.
This symposium is the latest of a series of “Monumental Personalities” symposiums. Many respected scholars and researchers have been brought together for this continuation of the series of international symposiums which originated in 2008 with the symposium titled “Ibn ‘Arabi and the Modern Era”. We believe that after the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated 2007 as “The Year of Mevlana”, it is important and beneficial for us to know and understand such a great Islamic scholar and to thereby to better understand Hazrat Mawlana’s well known saying, “I was raw [in the period of his life before meeting Hazret Shems], I became cooked, I was burnt." Through this symposium with internationally respected scholars in attendance we hope to increase our knowledge and understanding of Hazrat Shems.
